Water: Some Things You Should Know
Water – for thousands of years, cultures around the world have worshipped it. Whether it was pagan tradition or a silent reverence, our ancestors knew just how important water is to not just human, but animal, plant and Earth life. Unfortunately, in this
day and age, many of us seem to forget the essential life-giving properties of water. We not only pollute ourselves with sugary, low vibration, processed, ice-cold drinks, but we also pollute our dear Earth Mother in this process of polluting ourselves.
Every day thousands of chemicals, plastics and waste products enter our oceans, rivers, lakes and water sources. “Every minute of every day, the equivalent of one truckload of plastic enters the sea,” according to Green Peace. Single-use plastics are destroying our marine life and recycling alone will not save it. Why? Because over 90% of plastic is not recycled, and plastic production is still on the increase.
While big companies such as Coca-Cola, Nestle and Pepsi are the biggest causes of pollution in our oceans, we should not disregard the power we have as consumers. As free-thinking and free-willed people on this planet, we have a say and a choice in the matter. After all, change starts with just one person and that person is you! And I firmly believe that the key lies in learning to care for our own bodies. A great example for this is take-aways – start eating home-cooked meals instead, and you stop polluting yourself AND the planet!
So, if you are ready for change, allow me to share with you some healthy habits that will not only help you to feel better, but our beautiful home planet also.
- Staying hydrated
This is, by far, one of the best things you could do for your body. We constantly lose fluids through many different functions in the body, and so we need to keep replenishing ourselves with water, in order to keep the body going. This is especially true in the mornings, after a full night of fasting, which is why you would benefit greatly from starting your day with a glass of water. It will wake your body up gently, nourish you, hydrate you and even aid in digestion later on in the day. In the same way, a glass of water 30 minutes before a meal will assist digestion.
In terms of hydration, lemon juice is the most beneficial as it provides electrolytes. Mix lemon juice with warm water and the hydrating properties are increased. This is for two reasons: the first is that anything dissolved in water is more readily available to be absorbed by the body. Perhaps that is why sugary drinks are so bad for us… The second reason is that the body’s natural temperature is around 36 degrees Celsius, so anything going into the stomach needs to match that temperature before it can be digested and
absorbed by the body. Cold drinks will always use up a lot of energy in raising the temperature – energy that could be much better used in digestion!
So, a glass of warm lemon water in the mornings will wake your body up gently, giving much needed nourishment and hydration. Other variations include warm water with apple cider vinegar and honey. Feel free to experiment with any combination of these or other ingredients.
Another important thing to consider is that by staying well hydrated, you will reduce your sugar cravings, hence reducing that temptation to buy a sweet snack wrapped up in single-use plastic. So the next time that you feel a craving for something sweet, try having a cup of tea instead and see if that makes a difference. Alternatively, eat an apple! Fruit will both hydrate you and satisfy your sugar craving.
- Hydration on the go
Now that we have covered the importance of staying hydrated, lets talk about hydration on the go. In the world today, we are so used to buying bottles of water to quench our thirst we don’t even consider what it may be doing to our beautiful planet. So I encourage you to go out and buy your self both a refillable water bottle and a mini thermos or on-the-go coffee mug. The next time you feel a thirst for water or a craving for that delicious hot beverage from your favorite coffee shop, you can proudly hold up your bottle and say “its ok, I’ve brought my own”. And as a bonus, some places will even offer a discount for this green practice! Plus you will avoid all sorts of nasty chemicals leaching into your drinking water from the plastic bottle.
- Water and digestion
In the ancient Indian practice known as Ayurveda, it is said that water can either slow down or aid digestion. So what is the right way of consuming water? Well first of all, as I mentioned already, the water should be warm or at least room temperature to fuel the digestive fire rather than cool it down. Ayurveda also answers the much-debated question of whether or not you should drink water before/after a meal. The answer is no, and that is because water right before or after food with dilute the acid in your stomach, hence slowing the digestive process. What is recommended, however, is taking small sips during the meal as this will help soften the food and quench thirst, especially when eating greasy or spicy foods. Warm tea, such as ginger, will particularly aid this process without cooling the stomach down. You can have a few sips half an hour after your meal if you need to, and after around 2 hours you are free to drink as much as you like.
- Other Ayurvedic practices
A couple of good practices, according to this ancient knowledge, include sipping warm fennel, cumin and coriander seed infused water first thing in the morning and throughout the day in order to balance the Doshas (Ayurvedic mind-body types – Vata, Kapha, Pitta), as well as storing drinking water in a copper vessel over night to kill bacteria and provide the body with the essential mineral of copper.
Both practices are easily combined with a reusable water bottle (you can easily buy a copper bottle online) and mini thermos to keep your water warm throughout the day, and both provide numerous proven benefits for the human body.
- Happy you, happy planet!
There are many experiments out there regarding the molecular memory and reaction of water. Simply put, water has the ability to retain memory of things and vibrational frequencies (aka sound) it comes in contact with. It also reacts to these things on a molecular level. You may have seen photos of water forming different crystal depending on the word that was said (for example, Love, thank you, I hate you etc.) or genre of music that was played. Now, remembering that the human body is 60% water, imagine how words can impact a being, whether it’s a plant, an animal or even the food we eat. Whether or not you accept this research to be true, it is good to be mindful of how we treat ourselves, the people around us, our food, and the planet. After all, everything is but energy, varying vibrational frequencies. So the vibration of your words interacts with the vibrations of the matter around you. Therefore – happy you = happy planet!
I encourage you to be more aware of how you use and consume water in your everyday life. It is in all that we do, so use the tips I just shared to nourish yourself and this beautiful home planet of ours, and don’t hesitate to comment below with any questions you may have.
Love, Light and Truth,
